Día de los Muertos
Contributed by: Arvada Center on 10/5/2006

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities will be holding a special event on Thursday, Nov. 6 , in honor of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).

The event will include special book readings, art gallery tours, lunch and marionette puppet making. Over 200 students and adults from Valdez Elementary and Castro Elementary are attending the sold-out program.

Tony Ortega and Dr. George Rivera teamed up to create a series of children's books that will be featured at the Nov. 2 event. The books recount the adventures of a Chicano boy named Pano and his two dogs, Cholo and Vato.

Their experiences are described in both Spanish and English and give students a glimpse into Chicano culture, conveying an appreciation for the culture and history. Each school attending the program at the Arvada Center will receive copies of the books Aztec Adventure of Cholo, Vato and Pano and Who Am I? Family Adventures of Cholo, Vato and Pano.

Ortega is a nationally-renowed artist who creates artwork "about the Latino experience through individual slices of life of the community, family and many other sectors of present-day society, both urban and rural."

Ortega explains that "people in my artwork don't have individual features; they are faceless. Each artwork is only a part of the total picture, the Latino experience, not as an isolated phenomenon but as an active, integral part of the American society. This artwork illustrates the changing environment in the United States."

Rivera, a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Colorado-Boulder, as received numerous awards for work as an artist, art critic, curator and visual sociologist, focusing on Chicano experiences.

Through his work, Rivera continues to "search for better ways to create images that communicate across racial, ethnic and national lines."

Día de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition combining native Aztec and Roman Catholic pratices and beliefs. It is celebrated every year on Nov. 1 and 2 in conjunction with All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Día de los Muertos is not a morbid occassion, but rather a festive time to not only remember those who have died but to also celebrate the continuity of life.
