Excel Academy Charter School will be transformed into a haunted harbor this Halloween when it opens its doors to the community for its first-ever Trick-or-Treat Street.
The two-hour pirate-themed program - a parent-planned fundraiser that also will feature a canned food drive - will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 31 at the school, which is located at 11500 W. 84th Ave. in Arvada.
Admission is $1 per person, with a maximum of $5 per family.
Young ghosts, goblins and buccaneers will find candy treasure by "raiding" each classroom, where they'll also get to see the décor created by Excel students, teachers and parents.
Besides providing families with a fun, safe place to celebrate an early Halloween, Trick-or-Treat Street was launched help foster a sense of community between the K-8 charter school and its neighbors.
One way students, staff and parents hope to reach out to the community at large is by collecting canned goods during the event to donate to the Arvada Community Food Bank, 10405 W. 64th Place. Trick or treaters are encouraged to bring at least one canned food item.
The Arvada Community Food Bank, in cooperation with the City of Arvada, is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide a well-balanced, three-day supply of food to help families or individuals who qualify for limited emergency assistance.
Excel Academy will benefit from Trick-or-Treat Street, too. Proceeds from the event will be used to help buy playground equipment for the school.
Opened in 1995 as a K-6 school with a 126 students in a leased commercial property, Excel Academy has grown now to a K-8 school with an enrollment of approximately 450. In 2004, the school debuted its new 44,000-square-foot building located just south of Standley Lake.
Excel's new facility features 20 fully equipped classrooms, a computer lab, library, gymnasium, lunchroom, playground, stage, music and art rooms.
For more information about Trick-or-Treat Street, contact the school at 303-467-2295 or event chairperson Carrie Clausen at 720-937-9569 or carrie.clausen@cexp.com.
