Phi Beta Mu, the International School Bandmaster's Fraternity, has selected W. L. Whaley, music department chair at Pomona High School, as the 2007 Colorado Most Outstanding Bandmaster.

The award is voted on by members of the Phi Beta Mu Kappa Chapter (Colorado) and represents Whaley's contributions to the band director's fraternity, to its profession and to the students he serves. Whaley, a member of the Colorado Bandmasters Association (CBA) Hall of Fame, led his school's marching band to nine CBA Class 5A State championships.

The band also made it to the finals in a Bands of America Grand Nationals competition and marched in two Tournament of Roses parades. Whaley also conducted the school's symphonic band, which was recognized as the 2002 and 2003 Colorado Music Educators Association Honor Band. The director is also "One of the Top 100 Most Influential People in the History of Arvada and in 1999 he was named "Arvada Man of the Year." Whaley has been featured in School Band & Orchestra magazine's article, 50 Directors Who Make a Difference.
