Therapeutic Recreation professional earns honor
On 9/1/2007
Contributed by: Faith Gregor on 10/8/2007

Julie Hines, North Jeffco's therapeutic recreation coordinator, has been named TR Professional of the Year by the Colorado Therapeutic Recreation Society. This statewide group, part of the Colorado Park and Recreation Association, seeks to meet the unique recreation needs of people with disabilities using specialized and inclusive programs.

Under Hines' direction, North Jeffco's TR program has grown from a few activities for about 20 participants to dozens of activities for hundreds of participants. This growth is due to many factors: innovative and varied programs, many activities offered in cooperation with TR programs at other agencies, contact with schools and parents, and last but not least, Hines' energetic, responsive, cheerful and welcoming presence.

She was first attracted to a career in therapeutic recreation while pursuing a college degree in recreation. After a volunteer stint as part of a class requirement, she finished her degree with an emphasis in TR and a minor in gerontology.Hines, who worked at the North Jeffco Ice Arena while attending college, became part-time TR coordinator in 2001 and full-time in 2003.

The North Jeffco Park and Recreation District staff and board congratulate her for this prestigious and well-deserved award. For more information on the TR program, call 303-424-2739 or visit www.northjeffco.org.
