Former welfare recipients honored
On 6/11/2005
Contributed by: Kathy Hartman on 6/17/2005

The rain held off long enough for four Arvada residents to be among the 15 Stride graduates honored at a picnic to be held Saturday, June 11th, from 11 am to1 pm at Addenbrook Park.  The honorees have become independent of public assistance while participating in the Stride program. Each has overcome substantial challenges, including homelessness, lack of a high school diploma, and domestic violence. Today, they are employed in jobs ranging from Administrative Support to Research Assistant. All have children and all are single moms. Two have recently become homeowners. “Just refusing to give up is an accomplishment!” said Tanya Elkerton, an Arvada single parent employed with the Fish and Wildlife Service. She is grateful to Stride and her family for all their help and support. Stride helps low-income families with children become independent of public assistance. Stride has a 70% success rate, with Stride graduates earning, on average, more than $25,000 per year.
