HOW IT HAPPENED
For Christmas,
Dustin
had given me a ski weekend in Steamboat Springs. We were finally able to work it out so that we could go one weekend. We headed up to Steamboat on Friday in order to get in two days of skiing. Nothing seemed unusual about the weekend and Dustin was acting like himself.
We got to the slopes on Saturday (March 4) a little before 10 a.m. and had to deal with some pretty long lift lines because the gondola was down due to high winds. I didn't do too well on my first couple of runs and my new ski boots were less than comfortable. We did eventually make it higher up the mountain and away from the crowds. After a couple of better runs, I was at the top of the mountain adjusting my boot and "talking" to Dustin. However, when I looked up he wasn't there and I saw him a little ways down the mountain.
I skied down by him where he seemed to be adjusting something. At this point, I was still unaware of what was coming. He started talking about how we were on top of the world here and that he feels that way every time we are together. I thought that was sweet. Then, Dustin said, "That's why here on Buddy's Run (where we were skiing, and no he didn't plan it), I want to know if you'll be my 'buddy' for the rest of my life."
I think it is only when he started to reach in his pocket that I realized what was happening and the tears started flowing. I did attempt to say "yes" while crying; however, he had to ask me what my answer was again after I stopped. He handed me the box with the ring andI opened it, and was blown away with how beautiful it was. I put it on (shaking) and couldn't have imagined anything more perfect! After a few minutes, I gave it back for safekeeping (I am not the best skier) and we headed down the run. Needless to say, I think Buddy's Run is my favorite run!
