Aaron Azari, at-large councilmember on the Arvada City Council, was recently named vice chair of the National League of Cities' CityFutures Public Finance Panel (Panel).

The Panel's mission is to identify the challenges and potential solutions to a viable system of public finance for cities in the future. It was established as the National League of Cities' (NLC) first panel of city officials in 1998 to help identify the trends and challenges affecting America's cities. The Panel developed a framework for understanding the fiscal and intergovernmental challenges facing cities and an action plan, published in a report that was adopted by the NLC Board, Toward a System of Public Finance for the 21st Century.

Councilmember Aaron Azari was elected to the Arvada City Council in November 2001. He is also vice chairman, executive vice president and trust officer for Colorado State Bank and Trust. Azari holds a Master of Science degree in finance from the University of Colorado and a B.A. in history from Colorado State University. His professional expertise in finance made him a natural choice to serve on the NLC Public Finance Panel.

"I have enjoyed serving on the CityFutures Public Finance Panel as a board member for several years, and it is a true honor to be named the Panel's vice chair," Azari stated.

The next meeting of the Panel will be at the Congressional Cities Conference, March 11-15 in Washington, D.C.

Maria VanderKolk is an assistant to the city manager for the city of Arvada.
