Twelve Girl Scouts from across the Front Range put their acting skills to work this week as part of the Funky Fairytale Day Camp at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities.
The girls wrote their own fairytale scripts, made the props, learned about stage make-up and received ample acting tips while rehearsing to perform the skits for children at a library storytime at week's end.
They created three skits by including the makings of a traditional fairytale mixed up with a little real world drama and humor. They even threw in a modern day moral.
In "CinderSnow," Cinderella and Snow White become roommates and are at odds over one another's recycling habits or lack thereof.
"It's a little like Snow White, mixed with real life, but it still has the happy fairytale ending," said Christina Enloe, 11, of Highlands Ranch.
By Wednesday of the weeklong camp, the girls were already impressed with their progress.
"I thought they'd have a script for us to learn," said Kaitlynn Coates, 11, of Morrison, "but, we wrote the script yesterday, made our props today and we perform on Friday."
Many of the campers had previous acting experience, including April Anderson, 15, of Golden, who has been in five middle school plays and did "Lord of the Flies" last summer. But, acting experience isn't required and those new to the art were encouraged by their new friends.
Malaika McCullough, 12 of Louisville, said she had never performed on stage before but "my mom thinks I should be an actress."
"Everyone here is a drama queen," added Ailee Rowe, 12, of Westminster.
The girls laughed together and it was clear that the answer given by Eva Kasyon, 11, of Highlands Ranch, when asked what her favorite part of camp had been rang true for many of the girls. She pointed to a new friend and said "I met her on the first day and we're like best friends."
This day camp is one of the many Girl Scout camps that are taking place throughout the state this summer. Girl Scout camps are available for all
