Peace group to still protest at Harvest Festival
Contributed by: Cindy Lowry on 9/7/2006

On Sept. 1, Taylor Pendergrass, of the ACLU, submitted his letter to Ed Tomlinson (Arvada Harvest Festival Parade Chairperson) to answer. He then forwarded the letter to the Arvada City Council. I received an e-mail from Major Ken Fellman and Debra Woods. The chief of police and the city attorney got back to Taylor Pendergrass probably sometime late Friday.

On Sept. 5, Taylor Pendergrass and I talked briefly. He wanted to know if Ed Tomlinson had contacted me in any form of reply (written or vocal), and I stressed to him that I hadn't heard anything to date.

Also, on Sept. 5, Mr. Pendergrass suggested that I resubmit our application for consideration to march in the parade. The city attorney advised him that I should resubmit the application for consideration. I sent another e-mail with the information required to Ed Tomlinson for the parade, and I requested that I hear something from him no later than tomorrow afternoon.

I received a personal call from Ed Tomlinson at 4:55p.m. on Sept. 5. He asked me if I was still interested in participating in the march. He also asked if I could raise the monies necessary to be a "political organization," which is $250 fee for the parade. I stated to him that I couldn't raise the monies before the Saturday deadline. We ended the conversation in a cordial manner. I might add that this has been my only contact with Ed Tomlinson to date.

Therefore, because of the lack of actions and intentions taken by Ed Tomlinson andArvada City Council, the Colorado Citizens for Peace are still going to protest the Arvada Harvest Festival Parade. We will meet at the parking lots north of City Hall at 9:30 a.m., and then position ourselves in front of the City Hall before 10 a.m. We still want to bring the message home about the First Amendment Rights of "Freedom of speech and the right to peaceful assembly."

If you are interested in joining us in support, we will have additional signs for those who attend.

After our parade presence, we will still have our regular peace vigil from noon until 1 p.m. Camp Peace signs will be on our corners in solidarity with Cindy Sheehan's Camp Democracy in Washington, D.C.
