"Custodians of the Future" honored
Contributed by: Marilyn Call on 5/8/2008

Smiles, hugs and laughter between teachers and students were in abundance on April 22, 2008 at the annual 'Teacher Appreciation Night' when twenty Arvada teachers were honored for their impact in the lives of local high school seniors who will be graduating in June.

The annual event is sponsored by the Arvada Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Students who attend the church have the opportunity to nominate a favorite teacher and say thank you for making a difference. Over one hundred teachers have been honored in the past nine years.

Arvada Mayor Bob Frie, this year's guest speaker, noted "Teachers are the guardians of young minds. They are the custodians of the future. We don't do them enough honors or pay them enough. We need to work on that. I am touched by the interaction of students and teachers and this thoughtful occasion."

Common denominators in the student tributes were "mentor and friend", "passionate about teaching", "hard to choose just one teacher" "challenged and encouraged me", "not just a job, he really cared."

"Mr. Talley gives learning a purpose beyond the curriculum" Michelle Reynolds said in her tribute to Jeff Talley, Arvada West High music teacher. "He taught about reality. Sometimes he would stop teaching and give life lessons. He gave us reasons to love learning."

Jonathan Sheldon dubbed Debbie Miller, music teacher at Pomona High, "the coolest teacher of all time. She has made me want to become a music teacher."

"He is one of those teachers who cares and wants students to succeed" Kristy Cole said of Shane Freehling, biology teacher at Ralston Valley High. Kristy has decided to major in biology.

President Michael Jones of the Arvada Stake Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints said in his closing remarks, "Teachers, we hold you in high regard. We are hopeful and mindful of the roles our youth will hold in the world. Learning is ordained of God."
