Girl Scouts climb to new heights at camp
Contributed by: Joan Harrold on 7/24/2008

The sky was the limit last week as Girl Scouts from across Colorado participated in the Meadow Mountain Ranch resident camp program, "Head in the Clouds." The Girl Scout camp, located in Allenspark, Colo. in the middle of the Rocky Mountains, acted as the springboard for exploration as the girls took on outdoor rock climbing in Estes Park, a high ropes course at Colorado State University, tree climbing at City Park in Fort Collins and more.

"I saw the list of what was going to happen at this camp, and just decided to sign up right then," said Megan Rowe, 13, of Arvada. "It was all stuff that I had never done before, so that's an awesome opportunity."

Tree climbing was a favorite as girls took on the largest cottonwood tree in Colorado armed with only ropes, carabiners and helmets.

"This is something that people can't normally do..." Danielle Reimanis, 13, also of Arvada, said of tree climbing. "Being up in a tree that's, like, hundreds of feet tall, and touching branches that you would never otherwise be able to touch."

Megan agreed it was a unique experience, and one that she is proud to have accomplished. "I used to be scared of heights; I mean, I wouldn't even go on the monkey bars at school!" Megan said. "Now, after doing all this, I feel like I could take on anything."

Giving girls the courage and confidence to take healthy, personal risks and to build new skills is just one of the many pieces of camp and the Girl Scout program.
