Hail fails to nail us
Contributed by: Bill Orchard on 6/26/2006

It started with a call from our daughter in Boulder. Golf ball-size hail and it was headed our way, lots of it. Memories from 30 years in Arvada and two new roofs told us that this was all possible. The weather channel and the locals confirmed the threat. The guy next door drove his truck up on his front lawn under a tree. Cars were pulled off the street and into garages. All the gas station pump canopies were probably filling up fast.

We quickly cleaned out a spot in the front of the garage, now full of college student junk for the summer. It was enough for some of the truck. Memories of our son putting an engine in his car on the back patio prompted us to pull the Prizm through the side yard, into the backyard and jump the concrete to get under the patio cover. And then we made coffee and waited. The wind came, the rain came, the hail came. Only pea size and just for a short while. Kids playing in the gutter, cars fording the flooded streets, sun was shining, it was over. Coffee tasted good. Pulled the truck out of the garage and got that stupid car off my patio and out of my backyard.
