Our tiny boy, "Poco"
Contributed by: Robyn Rubin on 11/2/2006

I'm an employee of the Petsmart Petshotel in Littleton. We have many wonderful families come in to visit with us and entrust us with their precious fuzzy children. We have three playrooms for the dogs signed up for playtimes and daycamps; frozen non-dairy ice cream and peanut butter kongs for snacks; and 24 hour supervision of the dogs and cats.

About two months ago, a four-year-old blind chihuahua came to stay with us. His name is "Poco" and was a regular guest at the Petshotel. However, he was no ordinary guest and his Mom was no ordinary parent. Both were as close as two peas in a pod. Whenever she left him in our care, she always shed tears because she would miss him so much. At the same time, she would thank us for treating her little boy with such tender-loving care. She was confident that "Poco" was in very good hands and that made us feel very special.

The next week after he began his stay, "Poco's" life changed. I got a call at home from one of my supervisors. "Something terrible has happened! "Poco's" Mommy has died tragically!" he exclaimed breathlessly. I was shocked and fell silent. "What do we do now?," I asked myself. After speaking with the extended family, arrangements were made to surrender "Poco" to me and my husband. We love little dogs and were honored to take him home with us.

My husband and I love him so much and remember how much joy he brought to his Mommy's life. Everyday, we strive to live up to the standards she held herself to while caring for this beautiful, unusually friendly chihuahua. It's one of the ways we honor her memory.

Sadly, the day after we brought "Poco" home, he began showing signs of illness. Bloody diarrhea, constant regurgitation of fluids, and vomiting every bit of food in his system after every meal lead us to rush him to (our god-send) Alameda East Veterinary Hospital. This was a matter of life and death and we had to save him! After spending $4000 on tests and trips to the ICU, he was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease.

Now that we have his condition under control, we need help with the financial debt. We're looking for donations, even as minimal as $1.00 to help us stay afloat. I'm temporarily out of work with a slipped disc and it's putting a financial strain on us. We also have items to sell to raise money, such as a beautiful, gently used mattress, a Casio keyboard, etc. Just e-mail me at rsvpviv@yahoo.com. Help "Poco's" Mommy's memory live on by helping us care for him as only she could.
