Sonja the Supercat saves the day
Contributed by: camilla williams on 1/10/2008

One morning, around 5 a.m., I was awakened by a loud meowing outside our
bedroom door. It was Sonja, our Siamese cat, yowling and making a big noise about something. Thinking she was just hungry or wanted to go outside, I got up and reluctantly opened the door. Instantly I smelled smoke. This was before we had smoke alarms.

Hurrying downstairs, I saw smoke coming from the stove in the kitchen. Inside the oven was a smoldering black disk, which I realized must be a pizza, but looked more like a charcoal-broiled frisbee. After turning off the oven and throwing the pizza in the sink, I went down to the family room where my teenage son was sleeping peacefully. He had evidently come home late, put the pizza in the oven and fallen asleep. Needless to say, I was rather peeved, to say the least. He had a rude awakening and couldn't figure out what was going on at first. Years later, he said that I never let him forget that incident!

We could laugh about it then, even though it could have been a serious situation. If it hadn't been for our four-legged "smoke detector," we might have had a bad house fire. Sonja was the feline hero of the day and certainly our Supercat.
