The clients at the Margaret Walters Developmental Disabilities Resource Center in Arvada cheered loudly during the Nov. 12
Broncos-
Raiders game, proving that they deserved to win
YourHub.com's Broncos Country promotion. And that was before they even knew they had won.
Howard Murray, the center's recreation manager and the man who submitted the winning contest entry about why the center was the best place to watch a game, managed to keep it a secret from the approximately 40 people in attendance that two Broncos Cheerleaders and
Miles, the team's mascot, would join the party during halftime.
"I was excited and happy (when Miles entered the room) and I enjoyed the game," said
Larry Stelmack, a client at the center. Stelmack said he had a lot of fun talking with the cheerleaders, and that he enjoyed the pizza and photos with Miles.
Bruce Webber, another client, said his first thought when Miles and the cheerleaders arrived was that he wanted to shake their hands. Webber said he agreed that the center is the best watch to watch a Broncos game because it's "loud."
Murray's winning entry nominated the center, which helps to improve its developmentally disabled clients' quality of life, because the clients are huge Broncos fans and usually can't attend games because of cost or other barriers.
Employees from the center made sure the place looked the part of a first-rate party room by decorating it in a sea of orange and blue and hanging anti-Raiders shirts on the walls. Clients did their part by dressing in Broncos apparel and wearing face paint. Some even took the extra step of dyeing their hair orange and blue.
Even the cheerleaders said they were impressed with the passion the fans showed during the party.
"There's so much energy in that room," cheerleader
Lindsay McBride remarked after signing autographs and talking to the partiers.
Cheerleader
Catherine McEachern said of the center, "They do know how to throw a good party."
McEachern also said she hoped they were able to make Broncos fans out of the few Raiders fans in attendance.
Broncos intern
Michelle Friends helped to bring the special guests to the center and said she was happy to be a part of the momentous party.
"It's good to see that they appreciate it and enjoy it," Friends said. "I hope this is their best Broncos party ever."
