Broncomania saves this boy
Contributed by: Sharon Coffman on 12/19/2006

I am nominating a student of mine for the Broncos Country contest. Cesar Rodriguez is in the 6th grade at Vivian Elementary School in Lakewood. He definitely puts the "mania" in Broncomania. Every time Cesar has an assignment he can find a way to be sure the Bronco theme is included in his work. Here are some examples.

Last fall, we had an Arts and Science Fair. Cesar's project was to research how many years different players played for the Broncos. He included graphs and pictures and written work. His math graphs are always completed neatly in orange and blue colored pencils. His school binder is plastered with Bronco pictures and his own orange and blue drawings.

During our poetry unit, Cesar wrote poems about his favorite team, the Broncos. In art class, Cesar created Bronco pottery and a woven basket of orange and blue. Cesar's creative writng stories typically include a football game with the Broncos defeating every other team. Last spring Cesar ran a 5K race to help raise money for Jefferson County's Outdoor Lab. He was lucky enough to meet and have his picture taken with a former Broncos player who also helps with Outdoor Lab.

Cesar's biggest project is his Bronco collage. He has been putting pictures together since the start of this school year. Teachers and students donate their newspapers and Cesar adds his own pictures to the collage each day when his all of his schoolwork is completed. We have included a picture of Cesar with his famous collage. Students come by daily to see how his project is progressing. Formerly a student who was hard to motivate, Cesar has become an improved student academically and has found the Broncos to be a motivation for him in his education.

What a fine example of using a child's interests to motivate learning. Kudus to both student and teacher. Very touching story.
