The bumble bee flies anyway
Contributed by: Laura Higashi on 3/31/2007

My grandson, Nolan Kekumauokapilialoha, was born Nov. 4, 2005, with spina bifida. Despite 7 surgeries (1 to close the spine and 6 shunt adjustments), he is the happiest baby and his smile would melt your heart. It melts mine every time I see him.

The Colorado Spina Bifida Association is having its annual fundraiser on Mother's Day, May 13, at Washington Park (Mississippi St. Parking lot). Information and registration for the 5K run or 5K walk or 1-mile family fun walk at www.coloradospinabifida.org (click the 5K link). We did the 1-mile family fun walk last year and it was truly inspirational. When I saw a young girl with braces and crutches literally sprinting to get where she needed to go, I thought, "I don't walk that fast with 2 regular legs!"

Edmund Burke said, "No one could make a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little."

If you can do just a little to help the Colorado Spina Bifida Association, please do it! A little goes a long way. A little donation ...a little of your time. There are so many children who need our help and support.

The Colorado Spina Bifida Association programs include: "support for families of newborns with spina bifida; age-appropriate support and activity groups for children, youth, teens and adults; scholarships for seminars, conferences and other local and national activities; quarterly newsletter; information for the community."

If you can walk a few steps, join us on Mother's Day -- just a little will make a big impact. If you could see these kids and their smiles, you would know that you made a difference in the life of a child. This difference will make a huge difference in your own life!

Because the Colorado Spina Bifida Association cares about kids, I would like to have them receive the nonprofit award for their Mother's Day Walk. It inspires all of us, including the spina bifida kids with wheelchairs and braces and crutches, that we can come together and "walk" no matter our disability.

Mary Kay Ash said, "Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know that, so it goes on flying anyway."

Sincerely submitted,

Laura W. Higashi
