Families get in shape together at the Y
Contributed by: Nancy Lambertson on 4/3/2007

The Susan M Duncan branch of the Denver Metro YMCA Association has been offering a family group cycling class for a little over 1 year now. The families who are able to attend get a great cardio workout in a fun environment. Currently in the U.S., we are looking at a larger population that are facing obesity and it is rapidly increasing in children. With the cost and time commitment of sports and the cuts in education that have resulted in less P.E. classes kids are getting less of an opportunity to be physically active.

The class teaches both parents and the kids the importance of exercise and provides a fun way for families to exercise together. The only obstacle we have found is the bikes are too large for some of the smaller kids and we have had to exclude them. I have been trying to find money in a budget and through grants to provide a few kids size cycling bikes. It would benefit so many kids over time and start them on the right track for a healthy lifestyle.

As I have said many times the kids who still really want to do things with their parents (and have the time) unfortunately are to little for the bikes. The kids who will fit are either at that stage where to be seen with a parent is taboo, or have busy schedules. Please consider this and know that you would be helping to combat a problem that has been growing for the last few years.
