North Jefferson Taekwon-Do, Inc. (d/b/a Maestas Taekwon-Do) is seeking funding for its "Youth Taekwon-Do Program".
For over 25 years Maestas Taekwon-Do has provided training in the Korean martial art of Taekwon-Do to the northwest metro community. For much of the time the club was run by Master Ron Maestas as a hobby business. He believed that any person could benefit from the physical and mental training of Taekwon-Do. In 1999 Master Maestas turned the club over to his senior students. They formed North Jefferson Taekwon-Do, Inc. NJTKD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit registered with the IRS.
"We took Master Maestas' philosophy of providing our service to anyone regardless of their ability to pay and formalized it," said Mike Boyd, NJTKD Board Chairman. "We have a special program for at risk kids 5 to 18 years old. For most of our existence we have funded the program out of regular class fees paid by the general public."
"We have between 30 and 50 children involved in our program at any given time," said Robert Pettijohn, Head Instructor. "We've found that most any child can benefit from the discipline that our program offers. Parents have reported that children do better in school and are better behaved as a result of their children's training. A number of these kids can be taking class for free or at a reduced cost to the family. Of course, we are very excited when parents become involved in class along with their children."
"Our program cost $1188.00 per year per person including all North Jeffco Parks & Rec fees, equipment, and uniforms," Boyd reported. "That's a prettygood price for a program that's been around as long as we have and provides the kind of quality program that we do. We are always looking for financial support and children to participate in our programs."
