Horsing Around for Charity
Contributed by: Jory Weber on 4/13/2007

There are so very many worthwhile organizations helping families and the hungry, the sick and those who seem lost, one wonders if a non-profit protecting horses should be considered for this community grant. The HORSE PROTECTION LEAGUE (HPL), while it's main focus is to care for and find homes for abandoned and/or abused horses, mules, ponies and donkeys, has through it's outreach and educational efforts touched many lives, beyond the equine community.

The HORSE PROTECTION LEAGUE is located at the historic Churches Ranch which is owned by the city of Arvada and is in the process of being renovated by the city to serve as a living history museum. The number of animals is limited to 18 as the HPL is entirely funded and operated by volunteers. From the Board of Directors and the barn manager, to the feeders who come twice a day and those who clean pens and groom--everyone is a volunteer! Many have no background with horses--they come for various reasons, but invariably they are touched by the animals. Persons going through difficulties in their own lives have said that the horses have helped get them through and some serving community service sentences have continued to be active just because they have felt connected to the animals.

HPL reaches out to the community through a wide range of programs. One such program teams underpriviledged and troubled teenage girls with a volunteer and a horse. They work and learn together for several weeks and the trust that develops between the girls and their horses can be quite remarkable and have long reaching positive effects. Many varied groups, from lawyers to girl scouts, from veterinary tech students to 4-H participants have benefited from their time spent with the horses at HPL!

It is truly a gift to be able to help these beautiful animals heal, and in the process, be healed ourselves.
