baseball is life
Contributed by: kevin moore on 4/10/2008

I grew up in Arvada, the 7th of 8 children. I had 5 brothers and two sisters. My dad was a sports writer for the Denver Post, and a coach. I was involved in many sports, but baseball was my favorite. I played as long as I could, meaning my high school's coach cut me 4 straight years! I had tremendous coaches growing up, including my Uncle, Bob Moore, Ed Stevens and by sibling extension, George Minot. We learned to love the Great Game by focusing on the fundamentals, and by acknowledging that nobody ever knew Everything about baseball, that you always are learning more and more. We attended many many Denver Bears games, and later, Zephyrs games. But we never had a Big League team. We were cruelly teased, fired up by rumors that Marvin Davis or Bill Daniels were going to buy the Oakland Athletics or the San Francisco Giants and move them to The Mile High City. When the National League announced expansion plans in the late 80's, we went to work. My friends, Sean Bendel and Tom McAleer formed The Colorado Fan Coalition. They tirelessly promoted Denver, and went to every major league park and held up a huge banner which read "Baseball Belongs in Colorado". It was Destiny, forged by hard work. We were there when Bill White, NL President, visited Denver and was overwhelmed by a spontaneously formed crowd in the United bank Building. We knocked on doors and visited sports bars to urge a "yes" vote for the construction of Coors Field. We celebrated when Denver was selected, and we were there when the original Rox paraded down the 16th street mall. I shouted "hey, Big Cat"! to Andres Galarraga, and he waved back and smiled that giant smile. We were there in1993, part of the largest crowd in major league history, when Eric Young (the first Rockie ever to bat in a home game)took Kent Bottenfield deep and out of the park at old Mile HighStadium for a lead-off home run. Berzerk, wild, LOUD, emotional, unbelievable, and joyful are a few words that come to mind.I recall my7 year old son, pounding his mitt in the drizzle that first homestand, asking..."Where are the Mets"? as we experienced our first rain-out. It was The Best Rain-Out Ever. Later, at Coors Field, my 5 year old daughter and I sat and waited for the teams to emerge during a "Snow-Out". Only 2 folks waited longer than us, and we figured they had frozen to death!
We have been to many games, but never in in a luxury suite. Baseball brings families together. I want to bring my family, my friends to Coors Field, and tip a cold beverage in gratitude to the Hub, in a luxury box. It would be...perfect. Is this Heaven? someone will ask. And I will reply, "no......it's Coors Field, but you are darn close."
