I'm asked again and again how I got started making herbal stuff. There are a number of answers -- or at least a number of parts to the answer -- but a large part of it is a book (quelle surprise, for those who know me). It's Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in playing with herbs.
The book contains a good, basic overview of a number of useful medicinal herbs, a plethora of recipes, lovely photographs and short profiles of some of the great stars of the herbal medicine field. Rosemary's philosophy of herbs is simple -- herbal medicine, based in spirituality as well as physical well-being, for the whole family.
As such she's as thorough in care of the mind and soul as she is of the body. Among her recipes for nerve tonic teas and cough syrups one will find bath salts and facial muds as well -- it's only by feeling good about ourselves that we'll be truly healthy, and that will only happen when we take the time to really take care of ourselves.
At the same time she breaks the book down into a complete guide to health care for everyone, with sections on herbal remedies for men, women, children and the elderly as well as a complete index of useful medicinal herbs. I have used many of her remedies direct from the recipes and I have found them very effective (as well as surprisingly tasty).
I use some of her recipes exactly as they appear; others I have used as a starting point from which to make my own creations. Since the Family Herbal provides a solid grounding in the preparation of salves, tinctures and teas as well as specific recipes, I'm well prepared to do just that.
If you've got any interest in herbal medicine or body care at all, Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal is a great book to start with. Of all of my herb books (and there are a lot) this is the one I keep next top my work area, instead of shelved with the rest.
