The Czar reigns mightily
Contributed by: Russell Weisfield on 11/19/2006

The cold of winter is setting in and it's time to look towards the full-flavored warming beers of the stout and porter families and move away from the light, hoppy summer brews. It is with this thought that brings up one of Avery Brewing Company's newer concoctions, an Imperial Stout named "The Czar."

When one thinks of an Imperial Stout, one would be tempted to picture a malt maven's delight. In that regard, Avery does not disappoint. Granted, it won't have a maven making holy praises, but it certainly satisfies.

From the pour, the drink gives a nice head, as well as plenty of sugary smells. As it moves down the glass, the small legs hide that what's coming will be good.

The first sip lingers a bit before letting the flavors come forth. Slowly, the liquid grows in the mouth but fails to make you feel as if you have "sucked a golf ball through a garden hose" as you might want when drinking a full beer . His highness's finish is also a little light, though the mouth is left with strong toffee and mocha flavors and plenty of spice.

In fact, the spice is quite strong and may warrant a recording on the Scoville scale for peppers. Of course, the spiciness is what also makes the beer so good. When pairing this brew with food, you will want a bland meat -- perhaps the leftovers after your Thanksgiving guests leave.

Avery's Czar earns six canoes. For those people unfamiliar with the rating system, it is based on the old saying about certain beers being compared to procreation in a canoe -- "something" close to water. The more canoes, the better the brew, and as always, I rest on the seventh one -- which would represent perfection.

Avery recommends buying extras and storing them to let the numerous flavors mature. If you have the room and the willpower to wait to drink this joyous complex drink, it is an excellent idea.
