Daniel Leonard received the Boettcher Scholarship in 2009 as a senior at Arvada High School. Now, he is a freshman at the University of Colorado, fully prepared to embark on the next chapter of his life.
While attending Arvada High School, Leonard was a member of National Honor Society and was involved in a myriad of activities ranging from tennis and swimming to chamber orchestra, choral, and mock trial. An outstanding student, Leonard took several advanced placement classes in English, science, and history.
Last year, Leonard was one of forty stand-out students to receive the Boettcher Scholarship. Leonard explains, "I'm kind of an odd one out amongst the Boettcher Scholars given that I am pursuing Liberal Arts and most of the scholars are more involved with the sciences and engineering fields. Though I participated and did well in the sciences at Arvada High, my true passion has been what I'd call my creative arts: theatre and writing."
Leonard has always wanted to attend the University of Colorado and the Boettcher Scholarship allowed him the opportunity. Leonard said, "At CU, I thoughtwould be given the best opportunity not only to grow educationally, but also as a well-rounded and aware individual." He was attracted to the range of classes and majors available, and also loves the city of Boulder. "The Boulder community is highly invested in the environment, world community and living a happy and open lifestyle."
He is pursuing a degree in Theatre Arts, and plans to study English as well. Next semester, Leonard hopes to audition for a spot in the highly competitive, conservatory setting, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre program and also hopes to eventually enter the Creative Writing program.
Leonard has nothing but praise for the education he received at Arvada High School. "I was lucky to have some tremendously talented, invested, and energetic teachers at Arvada High School. I have been fully prepared for this experience and am most gracious to them for helping me to understand where I want to go with my life."
While Leonard is unsure exactly which career path he will follow, he does have some ideas in mind. According to Leonard, "Plan A is to enter the published art world. Whether that is in writing, acting, or musical theater is yet to be seen."However, Leonard says that his "Plan B" is to become a teacher, which is every bit as desirable to him. "Arvada's teachers showed me just how great an affect you can have on the world in the classroom."
Overall, Leonard says "The biggest goal is to do all I can to achieve my potential and to have a positive affect on the world."
