On Sept. 20, I decided to visit the new Olde Town Library. I drove south on Webster Street very slowly because of the St. Anne's Church parking lot paving project, and looked for a parking spot. There was a mother on the sidewalk holding an infant and books on one arm and with the other hand holding the hand of a tyke about 3 years old. The little boy broke away and ran into the street right in front of my car. Luckily I was driving so slowly I was able to stop, so there was not a horrible accident. Needless to say I drove home completely shaken. And I am sure the young mother was twice as upset.
Both the old Arvada Library and the Stanley Lake Library were designed with safe off-street parking.. The present library board could have built the new library down the hill on Old WadsworthBoulevard and have had plenty of room for parking and a lovely landscaped mini-park. The neo-moderne design of the new library would certainly meld with the construction of the condos and apartments being built in the area. The library, beingwhere it is, looks so out of place it sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb.
I hope the library board has plenty of insurance. Having the parking lot across the street is inconvenient and dangerous. Older folks, handicapped persons and families with young children will always have a problem crossing the street, especially at night, during inclement weather and when there is any function at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Traffic was not considered at all.
If I remember reading correctly, during the planning stages there were a few parking spaces built into the building. If that is true, those spaces should be reserved for the handicapped, elderly and young families. School-age children, teens, healthy adults, staff and the library board can park across the street.
Again, I say, what were they thinking!
