Ken Fellman

My name
:
Ken Fellman, Mayor of Arvada
My age
:
51
My family
:
My wife, Jill, and I will celebrate our 24 th anniversary in October. She is Director of Learning and Educational Achievement for Jefferson County Public Schools. We have two children: Dan, 22, who works for a marketing company, and will soon be moving into Olde Town Arvada; and Sara, 20, a junior at The George Washington University, in Washington, D.C. Both Dan and Sara attended Arvada schools, at Sierra Elementary, Oberon Middle School and Ralston Valley High School.
Education
:
I received my law degree from the University of Denver in 1981, and my undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1978.
What I do
:
I am an attorney and partner in a small law firm in Denver. I have worked over the years in a variety of areas of law, including commercial litigation, civil rights and employment law. Over the past 20 years, I've developed a practice in telecommunications and utilities law, where most of my clients are other local governments in Colorado and throughout the country. This opportunity to interact with other City and County officials has given me added perspective on how our City government works in Arvada.
My favorite place in town to hang out
: It's hard to pick one favorite. Jill and I spend a lot of time in Olde Town. We love the Arvada Center. The opportunity to take time to enjoy any of Arvada's parks, trails or golf courses is always a welcome treat.
What I like most about living here
:
Prior to my 20 years in Arvada I had lived in a variety of communities. It says so much about our City that so many people who grow up here tend to return to Arvada to raise their own families. That's a quality that most communities don't have, and it demonstrates that Arvada is a safe, healthy and enjoyable place to live.
My interests and hobbies
:
I love to spend time with my family, read, travel, play the guitar and listen to live music.
My favorite thing to cook
:
Cold sesame noodles and home made ice cream (usually not for the same meal!)
People who inspire me (and how)
:
My grandfathers. I was blessed to have them both play major roles in my life well into my adulthood. They were immigrants who worked hard to obtain an education and make a better life for their families. They instilled in us the great values of hard work, education, social justice, respect for all individuals and independent thinking.
How I have contributed to the community
:
I have served Arvada for 19 years as a Planning Commissioner, City Council member and Mayor. I have also served on numerous other community organizations such as the North Jeffco Foundation Board, Arvada Chamber of Commerce and the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities Arts Council. I have been a youth sports coach for North Jefferson Junior Baseball, Arvada Soccer Association, Arvada Girls Softball, and YMCA Basketball.
The biggest issues
facing Arvada now
:
(1) Growing our revenues to fund capital improvements and maintain a high level of quality services for our citizens; (2) transportation issues such as completing the beltway, implementing rail transit (the Gold Line portion of RTD's FasTracks program); (3) ensuring that our future policies encourage energy efficient, sustainable practices; (4) maintaining strong, effective relationships with our neighbors to insure that Arvada continues to play a role in the decisions that affect the entire metro region.
Why I am running
: I have a love of public service, and I am committed to it. I believe that during my eight years as mayor we have made much progress - the most important of which was our conservative budgeting that allowed us to save during the good times and, unlike so many of our neighbors, avoid having to make cuts in services during the recession years after the dot-com bust and 9-11. Other accomplishments of which I am most proud include: Local road improvements such as completion of 72 nd Avenue, a renaissance in the Olde Town business district, diversity of our housing stock, acquisition of many acres of new parks and open space, our status as one of the safest communities in America, and a gem of a new library, just to name a few. I'd like to help move many other projects toward successful completion - implementation of the Gold Line, connection of the beltway, completion of the separation of Wadsworth from the railroad tracks at Grandview Avenue, improvement of our technology and telecommunications choices throughout the City, and planning our future activities in a way that maximizes energy efficiency, sustainability, and a healthy community. I am disappointed with Mr. Fellman for listing his email address in the Arvada Report and never responding to any of my emails! If you are not going to respond, don't give your email as if you would listen to what citizens have to say. I am also disappointed with a number of bungled police incidents during the Fellman regime including the loss of court documents. Substance matters more than facade. I love my neighbors and we deserve good leadership.

Ken was my mentor at least 20 yrs ago when I began getting involved in my community. He has continued to recruit and encourage others to join him in community service. The man has a passion for it! He has modeled the energy and vision we need. I want him to finish what he's started by leading Arvada for the next 4 yrs as our Mayor.

Eight years ago, Arvada was a nice little town to stop and have a cup of coffee, maybe take your daughter to dance lessons at the Arvada Center. Today it is a clean, bustling city, full of energy and economic vitality, great places to visit, with roads that are pleasure to drive. Arvada has really blossomed under some terrific leadership. Other towns in the area should take note.
