From 1991 to 2001, he trained at the NY Athletic club under the Bulgarian fencer Vassil Etropolsky, a three-time winner of the World Championships and World Cup title. Alex was also coached at the Fencing Academy of South Jersey from 2003 through mid-2006 by Andy Ma, former Olympian from China. Since 2006, Alex moved to Colorado where he is now coached by Nickolay Logatchov at the CFA.

At the end of 1994, Alex retired from "Open" competition and was ranked 30th in Division I Sabre, the category in which the Olympic prospects compete. In 1992 and 1993, he placed 1st overall in the Veteran's Tournaments at the National Championships. In 1998, Alex participated in the Nike World Masters Games in Portland, Ore., and earned the bronze medal in the 50-plus age category.

He won the Bronze medal in the 1999 World Veteran's Championships in Siofok, Hungary, and took fifth place in the 2000 World Veteran's Championships in Godollo, Hungary. He also placed 12th in the 2001 World Veteran's Championships in Martinique and 7th in the 2005 World Veteran's championships in Tampa, Fla. He competed in the 50-59 age category in all of these. Alex won the USFA National Veteran's Championship in 1999, 2000, and 2001. He is a consistent finalist in National Veteran's competitions, having placed first at the Kansas City Veteran NAC in 2000 and 2001. He also won the Garden State Games Veterans and Open Championships in Sabre in 1999 and 2000.

Good luck in Sydney!
