The magic of sweaty friends
Contributed by: Colorado Boot Camp on 1/30/2008

Shaving your armpits. Unclogging the toilet. Checking between your toes for sock lint. Yes, some things are better done when you're alone. But when you're breathing heavy and dripping with sweat you want to have some company. Seriously. The more the merrier. You want your boot camp buddies.

There is power in community. There is strength in connecting with others who share your goals. A recent University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine study compared solo dieters to teams of dieters and found that ten months later the team members were much likelier to have maintained their weight loss - 66% v. 24%. A little peer pressure can be a beautiful thing.

Groups are dynamic. They take on an energy of their own that bounces back out and feeds the energy of each participant. And the blend of camaraderie and competition can be incredibly motivating. If one of your boot camp buddies is still cranking out push-ups, you're not gonna wimp out on yours, are you? Didn't think so. It's reassuring to hear from everyone else that they were hurting those first few days too. It's inspiring to know that the woman snatching the heavy kettlebell overhead could barely manage a light Turkish Get-Up when she started out. Oh, and who doesn't enjoy a good round of high-fives after a tough workout?

Have you ever been to a class at the gym where aside from the gossipy little clique off to the side nobody even makes eye contact and the instructor doesn't know a thing about you? Yeah, me too. It's different with boot camp buddies, though. Boot camp buddies are there to get fit, they know that everyone else is also there to get fit, and they naturally help each other out and cheer each other on in a high-energycollective pursuit of fitness.

Some of the energy of a group comes from the mix of participants, and some of the energy comes from the instructors and from the program itself. The excellent programs available through COLORADO BOOT CAMP create that perfect combination of factors. Sign up now with Colorado's only certified boot camp fitness program.
