The Mile High Edge of the United Soccer League announced this week the signing of two of the most talented women's soccer players to ever come out of Arvada.
Fran Munnelly
and her younger sister
Laura
, both most recently from the University of Colorado, will play this summer for the women's team owned by Arvada Soccer.
Fran Munnelly graduated from Colorado in 2006 as the most decorated player in school history. She was named to the College All-American team twice, making the third team in 2004, and then the second team in 2005. She finished her career in 2005,and is the Lady Buffs all-time leading scorer with 30 goals and 24 assists. She started 85 games in her career with Colorado, which was a school record at that time.
Laura Munnelly, a defensive specialist, just graduated this past spring from Colorado. She actually broke her sister's record for games played, with a total of 91. In fact, she only missed 20 minutes of her entire career. In 2006, she helped lead her squad to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
Both players grew up in Arvada and played in the local programs before attending Mullen High School.
They reunite this summer playing for the Mile High Edge, coached by Danny Sanchez, who just won his second national championship in three seasons with Metro State College. The team plays in the Western Division of the United Soccer League, the strongest women's league in North America. Their first game will be this Sunday, May 27, at the Kickers Clubhouse in Golden against the San Diego Sunwaves. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
