Windjammer...sailing the streets of Englewood
Contributed by: larry harkreader on 10/7/2008

Windjammer...the mind conjures images of white sails or colorful flags, rolling waves, a salty breeze, and maybe a screech of a seagull or two. To the distance runners at Pomona, Windjammer is a cross country meet hosted by Englewood High School. The breeze is hundreds of your competitors huffing and puffing with you as you race around the school three times on the 3.1 mile circuit. The screeching seagulls are a bevy of coaches exhorting you on. The rolling waves...a one foot drainage recess 100 yards from the start that caught runners in every heat. The colorful flags ... all the uniforms from the 18 schools attending the meet. The white sails...flags of surrender that Pomona will never wave.

Pomona managed a 5 th place finish. Adam Sinda led the Panthers coming in 4 th. Not far behind, Ian Harkreader garnered a 9 th place finish. The Panthers were hoping for a stronger showing going into the league meet this week but were stymied by the strong team from Chaparral and tight turns on the course.

The Panther ladies were led by Kara Farnes and Emily Barlow. Coach Urban is thrilled with the way the girls are competing with each other and their camaraderie. The varsity girls seem to be evenly matched with each week bringing a new finishing order.

The Panthers travel to Dakota Ridge this week for the league meet on Friday, October 10 th.
