Tigers Rugby Football Club begins the defense of their Colorado Youth Rugby North Division title this Saturday, March 1, at home against a new Colorado Youth Rugby team, the Glendale Raptors. Kick off time is 11 a.m. at
Broomfield County Commons Park.
Tigers Rugby Football Club unveiled their power and speed in a defensive battle with HS Rugby titan, Denver East Rugby Football Club last Saturday.. "The East Invitational", at East HS Football Stadium is a yearly preseason scrimmage that also featured Tigers' league rivals, Ft. Collins RFC, against East. Eighteen Holy Family students signed on for the fifth Tigers Rugby campaign. In the final tune up for the Tigers, Denver East scored 12 points against the Tigers' scoreless attack. The teams also played a B side match (East 5 - Tigers 0). In a C side match,
Lewis Rosenberg (Ralston Valley) scored 2 tries and
Joseph Gonzales (Centaurus HS) added another to give the C Side match to the Tigers 15-12.
Pomona High School contributes nine players to Tigers Rugby's roster. Four 5A Football players had an immediate impact against Denver East's A-Side. Outside Center
Charles Martinez was recruited first by Captain and Flanker,
Travis McKee.
Ryan Torrez is a speedy winger with tackling skills; and
Mike Sadowski, a Pomona linebacker, started for the Tigers at Inside Center.
Luke Stanley,
Joshua Carvalho, and
Anthony Gaglia saw action for Tigers RFC against Denver East A, B and C sides.
Alex Hillman and
Tony Costello, also from Pomona, and
Justin Thunell of Ralston Valley HS will see their first action in a Tigers Rugby uniform next week against the Raptors. Faith Christian Academy's
Daniel Sargeant, of Broomfield, faced off against a few FCA school mates in the battle with Denver East as a Tigers' Winger.
Travis McKee,
Quincy Anderson and
Markus Harvey led a powerful group of forwards as a legitimate challenge to the three-time State Champions, Denver East Rugby. McKee, a 5A South Metro Second team All-Conference Defensive Lineman for Pomona High School; Anderson, a 2A First team All State Offensive Lineman, and Markus Harvey, a 2A Second Team All State Defensive Lineman for Holy Family, form the aggressive Back Row of the scrum. Harvey, who set a Tigers single-season try scoring record (15 tries) in 2007, will be the 8-man this Saturday, setting the ball for the Tigers attack.
