Pomona wins 5A Regional


The Class 5A Region 1 track meet was held last Wednesday and Saturday. Pomona Boys scored 157 points in winning the meet. The Panther Girls placed fourth. Pomona's Coach Black was named Coach of the Year. What a great week. The Panthers will be sending 11 young men and 6 women to the State Championships this Friday and Saturday (May 16 and 17) at Jeffco Stadium.

The Panthers were led by some notable performances in all areas of track. Jon Gamble set a new school record of 6'4 1/2" in winning the high jump. Jeff Brown finished 3rd. Derik Linch won the 110 hurdles and placed 2nd in the 300 hurdles. He was also on the 3rd-place 800 relay team. The throwers showed their strengths in both the shot and discus. Cole Carveth won the shot and discus events. Hayden Hunsucker placed 3rd in the shot and 4th in the discus. Ryan Duman rounded out this dynamic team with a 6th-place finish in the shot and 2nd in the discus. Dustin Ebner won the 200-meter run, placed 2nd in the 400, was on the 3rd-place 800 relay team, and anchored the winning 1600 relay team. Joining Drew on the relays were Dustin Ebner, Jon Bunge, Derik Linch, and Cliff Henry. Joining his teammates at state will be Bryce Hill, who placed 2nd in the pole vault.

Emily Hunsucker led the Panther girls with first-place finishes in both the shot and discus. Kaitlin Krattenmaker placed 3rd in the shot. Kelsey Snider will be going to state in the 100-meter dash. The relay team of: Jessica Williams, Macy Jones, Kelsey Snider, and Georgia Lavey place 2nd in the 1600-meter relay.

It was a good day to be a Panther. We wish these athletes well in the State Meet this week.
