Ever pick up a log and see millions of critters scurry back to cover? Ever been on a quiet picnic, the sun goes down, and mosquitoes come out by the billions? Ever been on a peaceful drive then run into Rockies and Broncos traffic? That is what spectators saw at the Broomfield Invitational on Friday, September 19 th. Broomfield is a unique event in that there are only two races: Boys & Girls. First all male runners line up and dash across the soccer fields - 622 knees, elbows, feet .... all pumping, stomping, kicking to get into position. Quite a sight! Then it is the girls turn and another wave of humanity breaks across the field.
At the start of the mayhem, Pomona runner, Ian Harkreader, found himself in unfamiliar territory. Ian led the race for the first 300 yards as he raced from the start line to the traffic cones, marking the entrance to the bike paths and the remainder of the course. The rest of the fast starters headed the wrong way! They were targeting the goal post about 50 yards off the course. With parents and spectators yelling for the mob to turn, a few of the front runners saw Ian and headed off in pursuit. When the dust settled, Ian finished in 5 th place, teammate Adam Sinda came in 4 th, and Pomona finished 3 rd overall.
The girls either learned from the boys start or listened to directions and had an uneventful start.
The lady Panthers were led by Kara Farnes. Emily Barlow was able to participate in her first varsity meet after transferring to Pomona from JeffersonAcademy.
The team welcomes Emily's work ethic, ability, competitiveness, and upbeat outlook.
This week, Pomona travels to Littleton for the Dave Sanders Invitational held in ClementPark.
The meet usually features some of the top teams in the state and should be a great event.
