CURLING: Your Olympic Dream May Still Be Alive

Not many average folks could imagine themselves winning Olympic Gold in the 400m dash, downhill skiing, or Luge. But, if you've see Curling on television admit it, you could see yourself standing on the podium for that event.

Such is the case of one local Coloradan, Matt Culbertson. The FIRST TIME he saw Curling on television was during the Olympics at which time he thought to himself, "My Olympic dream is still alive!". Culbertson says, "Let's face it, of all the Olympic sports, this one looks easy."

In fact it is a simple game where two teams compete by alternately shooting stones down a sheet of ice with the objective of leaving their stone closest to the middle of the "target", which is actually called a 'House' in curling vernacular.

Culbertson says, "It was a few years later when The Ice Ranch ice arena opened that I actually got to try curling - and I've been doing it ever since." He currently curls in the curling league at The Ice Ranch once a week on a team with his wife Cara, and two other team members who he met during previous leagues.

While Culbertson says, "You don't have to be super fast, super strong or super coordinated to compete . . . The dream may be a little farfetched now." But, he enjoys it as one sport that he can not only play on the same team as his wife - but his kids can even join in on the fun.

Culbertson will also be volunteering at The Olympic Team Curling Trials, February 21st - 28th at the Broomfield Event Center. Tickets are as low as five dollars a seat and can be purchased from Denver Sports Commission ( www.denversports.org). A Two for One ticket voucher good for certain seats at Monday's draws (that's a game in layman's terms) can be picked up at The Ice Ranch ice arena in Littleton, Colorado.
