Summer is fun

After a good 2009 track season, several of the Pomona Panther distance runners are getting together to run "fun" races this summer. First on the agenda was Sunday's Colfax Marathon. The Panther runners participated on four relay teams and one young man, Alex Herron, completed the entire marathon on his own.

The Colfax Marathon has several different races that run the same time: the full marathon, a half marathon, and a marathon relay. The relay is made up of 10k, 5k, 10k, 5k, and 12k segments. Team Urban did quite well in the marathon relay and had several members "chasing" the motorcycles. The motorcycle escorts drive in front of the racers to insure the course is clear. Their presence announces to the crowds that runners are coming. Team Urban ended up winning the relay division and crossing the finish line before all other runners. Team members were: Vaughn Olona, Avi Kohen, Ian Harkreader, Matt Harkreader, and Adam Sinda.

The next distance team from Pomona was Urban Runners which included: Logan Shefellbine, Tom Williams, Kade Shaffer, Dylan Hayes, and Michael Rainey. Excluding Michael, this was the first road race these runners had participated in. Dylan was amazed that you could run "alone" with 5,000 other runners. Last but not least was Pomona's Urban Runners2 . The team was made up of female runners from Pomona. It included: Kelly Marks, Heather Crowe, Brandy Fisher, Kara Farnes, and Ashlee Gallegos. The ladies ran well and managed to finish 12 th in the open relay division.

Other Pomona runners included: Alex Herron who went the distance without help and finished the marathon in 3 hours and 27 minutes and Emily Barlow who participated on a team called "The Twisted Sisters". Several of these runners will participate in next week's Bolder Boulder along with Pomona's distance coaches Steve Urban and Brian Brindisi and throwers coach Chad Barworth. Pomona cross country is planning their summer running program starting June 1 st. Any present PomonaHigh School student or incoming 9 th grader is welcome to join them. Contact Coach Steve Urban at 303-421-3377 if you are interested in running.
