Edge U-11 girls champs in Pueblo Sunbelt Class
Contributed by: Edge Soccer Club on 3/5/2008

By David Mazzocchi

The Colorado Edge U-11 Girl's Select team overcame the rain, wind, and a stubborn Real Olympico opponent twice to win the tournament championship in the Gold division of the Sunbelt Classic last weekend in Pueblo. The championship game was the third meeting between the two teams in tournament play over the last two seasons, with the Select team coming out on top again by winning in a thrilling and tense shootout.

The second meeting was the previous day in tournament bracket play, where the Select team posted a dominant 3-0 win over a surprised Real team. But it was obvious from the start of the championship game that the two teams were ready to do battle and nothing would be easy.

Both teams took several shots during the game, but it ended in regulation tied at 0-0. After two 5-minute overtimes and the score unchanged, the referees organized the two teams and their goalies and prepared for a shootout. After five players from each team took their shots, the shootout score was tied at 3-3. The sixth Real player had her shot blocked by the Edge goalie, but then the next Edge player hit her shot to win the game and the U-11 Girl's Gold championship.

Both teams celebrated each other's success at the medal ceremony knowing they had given their best in a very tough game.
