Arvada fencers visit Olympic Training Center
Contributed by: Margaret Matanovich on 4/16/2008

Gabe Naccarato, a 10-year-old sabre fencer at the Colorado Fencing Academy, was the proud winner of a tour of the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on Saturday, April 5. The contest was sponsored by Kids' Pages magazine. Gabe and several of his friends enjoyed an extended tour of the facility and had lunch with Cody Mattern, a member of the U.S. Olympic Team.

Cody is an Army athlete and represents our country around the world by sharing his joy of fencing with service men and women.

After the tour and lunch, Cody coached Gabe and his friends through several bouts. He also gave them some interesting exercises to do and elegantly explained his chosen style of fencing, epee. Epee is one of three fencing disciplines; the other two are foil and sabre.

Cody will be fencing in the upcoming North America Cup in Portland, Ore. In August, he travels to Beijing, China, with his fencing partner, Seth Kelsey, for the Olympics.

Cody is not only a fantastic representative of our country and the sport of fencing, but also a great role model for our youth. This young man not only spent hours with these kids after extensive travel, he showed up bald. Cody, as well as other athletes who live at the Olympic Training Center, had his head shaved the day before for a charitable event benefiting child cancer patients.

En garde, ready, fence!
