A time before war-Pt. 2
Contributed by: Joseph Vendegnia on 9/21/2006

Earlier this summer I posted a story about my wife and I's trip to the Middle East - specifically Israel. We were there for 14 days from June 13 thru June 27. Of course, as most people know by now this was just prior to the conflict that erupted between Israel and Hezbollah. We had been in Israel to accomplish two things: one being to absorb the beautiful scenery and historical sites and the other to volunteer for an organization
called Bridges For Peace. This organization operates the largest food bank in the nation of Israel and is located in Jerusalem. So many immigrants arrive in Israel monthly from many countries around the world and have a difficult time 'getting started'. We worked in the food bank preparing orders and then making trips to deliver them to different organizations and individuals around the country. In between we saw many sites such as the Mount of Olives and visited the Old City of Jerusalem. What many don't know is that many non-Israeli people work and live in these areas, many of Arab descent. The whole people mass of the nation of Israel is very diverse much like the USA. Unfortunately the actions of some groups caused that society to be at war a good part of this summer. We are glad that things have settled down so tourism can resume and people's lives can return to normal and we can later in our lives make a return visit.
