The China connection - the trip/the exhibit
Contributed by: Janet Archuleta on 12/28/2007

A group of12 artists from Colorado were invited to visit the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China, for an American/Chinese art exchange and exhibit in April 2007. Participating artists were Patti Andre, Jan Archuleta, Van Chan, Becky Everitt, Sheri Farabaugh, Maya Heneghan, Jan Rhinehart, Dorothy Pecina, Jean Riordan, Becky Silver, Gale Simonson and Diane Wood.

The American Art Delegation arrived in Shanghai and was met by their host, Ning Sun, who is an accomplished artist and professor at the Academy of Art in Ningbo, China. We were also met by our tour guide, a translator, a student photographer and a student tour assistant. The highlight of the evening was a cruise on the Huang Pu River featuring the beautiful lighted skyline of Shanghai.

After touring the Shanghai Museum of Art the next morning, we were driven by bus to Hangzhou. We stopped at a beautiful park at West Lake. The sky was gray and it was misty over the lake, yet it was sunny. We enjoyed the sunshine, sounds, fresh smells and unique sites in the park. It was especially nice seeing Chinese families relaxing in the park, and we all took many photos.

The following day we toured two branches of the China Academy of Art. We met students, teachers and the dean of the art department. Our Rocky Mountain Art Exhibit was held that evening and we were greeted with applause frommore than100 students and staff members. The vice president of the academy spoke to everyone, stating that the exchange of art and ideas between the Americans and Chinese is a good way to build good relations between our people.

The next day we were driven to the old city of Doumen to sketch with several students and staff members. This was a perfect spot to photograph and sketch what would later become a painting.

We also visited the ancient town of Wuzhen, which is a large outdoor museum full of culture and information about China 1,500 to 2,000 years ago. It was too crowded to sketch, but we took many photos and said hello (Ni hao) to many people.

Our last stop, before returning to Shanghai, was the charming city of Suzhou, with its canal, bridges and white buildings. Suzhou is known as the Venice of the East. Our city guide took us to a famous Chinese private classic garden that was beautiful and serene. We also visited a silk factory and were very impressed with the process of making silk from the cocoons of the silkworms.

The Chinese were very kind and gracious and I would not hesitate to return to China to see more of its wonders.

The China Connection Exhibit will be held at The Great Frame Up, 430 Main St., Longmont. Ten artists will be showing their paintings from their visit to China last April. The public is invited to a free Opening Reception on Jan. 11 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The exhibit will run from Jan. 10 to Jan. 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
