Travel wisdom for women
Contributed by: Becky Wilcox on 4/11/2007

One benefit of traveling with City Lights Travel Club is the "safety in numbers" concept. But women still need to take special care, even when traveling with a group. There is no need to stay home to stay safe. Just follow a few simple rules:

  • Watch the crowd. Stay alert in crowded areas such as bus stations and street celebrations where you are likely to be jostled. Thieves use these circumstances to grab your stuff.
  • Protect your luggage. Secure the strap of your luggage around the leg of your chair, around your leg, or sit on it while waiting in terminals or stations to prevent your bag from being grabbed.
  • Don't count your money in public. And don't carry your valuables in a purse. Use a money belt or neck pouch to keep your money and documents safe. Use your purse for carrying maps, sunglasses, etc.
  • Don't bring expensive jewelry. Leave anything of great sentimental or monetary value at home. Don't take the chance of having it lost or stolen.
  • Dress like a local. Learn the local dress code as soon as you arrive. A woman's dress can be a major issue in some developing countries. That's not to say you can't dress up - just choose the right place to wear your fancy clothes and ensure that you have safe door-to-door transportation.
  • Carry a light. Consider avoiding deserted streets after dark, but if you can't, carry a small flashlight in your hand. Also consider carrying mace, pepper spray, or a whistle when wondering away from the group.
