Your personal story = Your BEST SPEECH!
Contributed by: D B   on 11/22/2008

As I look around at the events that have been taking place in the recent year with the election, the economy and other current events, there is more of a need than ever before for people to communicate. What resonates with people is positive messages, words of hope, life messages, and inspiration that people are hungering for in these uncertain times.

I recently read about International Speech Contest champion LaShunda Rundles in Toastmaster magazine and also in Jet magazine. I read about her speech and very compelling story about her life with the medical condition of systemic lupus. Her speech touched a chord with the audience and judges for several reasons: She shared her experiences of surviving a disabling and life threatening disease, and she delivered a message of hope on how she was able to overcome in spite of all the odds with strong family support and spiritual strength.

She takes it a step further by seeking an avenue to bring her message of hope to the world, but was faced with another challenge-- a fear of public speaking. To overcome that challenge, she found Toastmasters. Her speech was personal and there were elements of the speech that people from all walks of life could relate to. What's even more remarkable is the fact that she won the top prize after only being involved with her Toastmasters club for four years. Many contest champions have been in Toastmasters for a much longer time before they achieved that level of accomplishment.

This is important to know because if you have the talent to speak, and a willingness to share your personal story, your possibilities are limitless because your story is your best speech. Why? It's because the story is real and connects with your audience who share similar stories, triumphs, and victories. No one can share that but you and no one can deliver it with the same passion and emotion that you can.

Simply Speaking Toastmasters is here to help you structure, develop your speech, and give you're the guidance needed to achieve the best scores with the contest judges. Once that's set in motion, maybe YOU will be the next International Speech Champion!
