HubCap: Putting the debate back in Christmas
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 12/19/2006

One of the things we like to talk about most at this time of year, besides the Broncos' chances of making the playoffs/winning the AFC Championship/winning the Super Bowl, is the current state of the holiday a lot of Americans celebrate on Dec. 25, commonly known as "Christmas."

Have we made it too commercial? Is it too much about being a consumer? Should we say "Merry Christmas" to people who aren't Christians? Should we just assume everybody else is Christian and say "Merry Christmas" to everyone? Is Santa real? Was I going a bit too far when I punched that lady in the face for the last TMX Elmo on Black Friday? Are we forgetting the real reason for the season amidst all the shopping, decorating, cooking, travel, bickering, spending of money and getting drunk at the office holiday party? Is all the shopping, decorating, cooking, travel, bickering, spending of money and getting drunk at the office holiday party the actual reason for the season?

A few YourHub.com users have tackled some of the questions that come up for all of us during the holiday season. No one has yet answered this one, though: Why does my grandmother hate fruitcake? Subquestion: Why is it still funny every year when I buy her a fruitcake as a gift?

What do you think? Post your take here.

Erin Di Paolo, of Green Valley Ranch, is going to keep on calling them " Christmas trees," thank you very much.

Gerard Spicer
, of Lakewood, says Christmas might need to be revamped -- by moving it to September.

Chris Dorn
, of Lakewood, says regardless of what you call it, have a good holiday season.

Carla Shepherd
, of Littleton, and her husband have told Santa not to visit their kids, so they could learn what Christmas was really about.
