Blog Entry 1 of 6 The Hometown Kid

Julius Vaughns This is a collection of what my life has been and currently is like living in Aurora. Having lived here all my life, I see a side of the city that many people don't. So bear with me as I take you through a journey through what I like to call Colorado's forgotten city.

A not-so-fun New Year's ending
Contributed by: Julius Vaughns/YourHub.com   on 1/2/2007

On New Year's Eve, some friends and I decided to ring in the new year surrounded by hundreds of people in downtown Denver. We went to a popular club called The Shelter, a spot we knew would be live and jumping. The night was fun overall, as we danced our way into 2007.

The atmosphere was normal considering the circumstances; everyone was having fun on all three levels of the club. There was lots of energy and it seemed like the night would end on a peaceful note, and I assumed that it did since I didn't witness or even hear about any fights. We left the club close to 2 a.m. Monday and went home that night thinking everything was fine.

However, by the next morning, my entire happiness dwindled as I learned of the death of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams. The death hit me hard for a couple of reasons.

First off, we were at the same club attended by Williams and other local celebrities that night. I actually was standing about 5 feet away from him just minutes before we left the club. I remember noticing a big 'T' on the front of the baseball cap he had on. My friend said he actually exchanged hellos with Williams earlier that night, saying how nice and expensive his necklace looked. That made the experience even more eerie to know that someone I came to club with spoke to Williams just hours before he was killed.

The experience also made me realize how short life is. At 24, Williams had only begun his life and had so much to look forward to. I'll be 24 in about 10 months, so you can imagine the thoughts that went through my head when I learned of his death.

And what made it even worse was knowing that if I would've been in the wrong place at the wrong time, I could've been right behind his limo going home, and, well, who knows.

I can't help but remember that this is why I hardly ever go out anymore. Senseless things like this make me want to just stay home or go somewhere where I know the crowd and feel 100 percent safe.

I can definitely say that you never know when your time on earth will expire, but it just sucks that the clock ran out on Williams so early.

Hey I know how you feel. I just recently lost someone very close to me an in a very disturbing way. Going out for me is like I'm always looking over my shoulder and locking every door behind me. That’s the worst feeling in the world. But you can't let the worlds uncontrollable problems keep you from enjoying life, so don't you stay stuck on thinking about woulda, coulda, shoulda you will drive yourself crazy, believe me.

We need to bounce back as a state and let the rest of the nation know that things are not like that around here and only a handful of individuals affect the way we are perceived. Colorado is a great state to live in and this could have happened anywhere. Go broncos and farewell to a young hero. Rueben R. Dorado(Denver)

... but, of course, now he isn't going to be speaking to those kids.

Wow. Powerful stuff. It's a shame Williams is gone -- I heard he had arranged to make an out-of-state trip to talk to kids about the dangers of being in a gang and how they should avoid gangs ...
