Name: Nancy Spence

Seat you are seeking: State Senate District 27

Age: 71

Family: Husband Peter, 4 children, 6 grandchildren

Occupation: State Senator

Hometown: Denver, Colorado

Your Web site:www.nancyspence.org

Favorite local place to hang out: Cherry Creek State Park that is within biking distance from my house.

What do you like most about living here? I love the change of seasons, the independent spirit of the people and the close proximity to the mountains.

Interests and hobbies: Golf and racquetball are two sports that I enjoy, along with working out at the Trails Recreation Center. Reading and business travel are also favorites - I read mostly non-fiction and enjoy political travel. We see lots of movies and visit art museums frequently.

Favorite TV show: Fox News, of course.

Favorite Web site:Colorado Political News

People who inspired you (and how): My husband, Peter, who has inspired, supported, helped me through raising children, grandchildren and campaigning. He loves politics, sports, and travel - the things that consume a great part of our lives together.

How you have contributed to the community: Over the many years that I've lived in Arapahoe County my involvement with public education is probably the most gratifying public service. A school board member is very close to the neighborhood - more so than being a state representative or senator. I feel as if the board on which I served added great value to our community. Additionally, the years I spent as a member of the board of directors of Developmental Pathways and my service on the Craig Hospital board of directors have given me much more than I have given back but I feel that this voluntary service has added to our community.

What are the biggest issues facing your constituency now: A week ago my response may have been different, but with the downturn in the stock market and concern about the nation's economic future my interest has turned to policy issues directed toward families. When the legislature takes up in January, we are required to cut well over $100 million from the 2008-09 state budget. It's imperative that these cuts be made even more carefully than we've done in the past in an attempt to protect jobs, assure that citizens can keep their healthcare, pay utility bills and afford to fill up their gas tanks.
