APS home to Colorado Teacher of the Year

The teachers of Aurora Public Schools are some of the best. In fact, Wal-Mart recognized Christine Sundberg as the best teacher in all of Colorado.

A surprise ceremony on October 9 honored Sundberg as the Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year for Colorado. Sundberg teaches juniors and seniors at Hinkley High School. In her honor, Hinkley received a $10,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation.

Sundberg teaches several International Baccalaureate World History classes, an African Studies class and a U.S. History class. She helped organize the Landmine Task Force that has raised more than $31,000 for the United Nations Landmine Initiative, through the Adopt-a-Minefield campaign.

"Academic success, while a large portion of our goal, cannot be our sole focus," said Sundberg. "Public schools have the responsibility of developing and nurturing caring students who are aware of the world, who know how to think and who can assess situations from a variety of perspectives."

Sundberg was chosen as Colorado Teacher of the Year from among eighty Colorado teachers who were named as winners of the 2007 Local Teacher of the Year award.

Sundberg is now eligible for the highest honor: National Teacher of the Year.

This is the 12th year for Wal-Mart's Teacher of the Year program. More than $5 million has been given to schools across the country, in honor of outstanding educators.

I frequently pass by Hinkley High School on my way to work and when I saw the Teacher of the Year sign, I just knew it would be Chris Sundberg. I went to Hinkley and although I was not in any of her classes, I did participate in a theatre show about Africa. And I went to England with her, the upperclassmen of the theatre departmen and some upperclassmen IB students. She is a wonderful person and totally deserves this honor. Congrats Chris Sundberg.
