A hush fell over the room as CCA Flute Instructor
Dennis Rawley introduced internationally-acclaimed flutist
Jessica Quiñones just before her concert.
Quiñones, accompanied by acclaimed pianist April Travel, delivered a lunch hour concert, "Composing with the Times," an Oct. 22 recital/lecture performance for the CCA and Aurora community.
Throughout her lecture/recital, she added historical frames of reference to each of the seven pieces she performed - giving the audience a glimpse into the cultural and musical trends of the eras in which each piece was composed.
"Jessica's lecture and recital was truly a pleasure for all those who attended," said
Amy Rell, Chair of CCA's Arts & Humanities Department.
Quiñones even delivered messages to the audience from some of the composers who are still living.
"I spoke with Eddie McGuire a few nights ago," Quiñones said, "And he wanted me to tell ask you to envision a flower blooming, and ultimately decaying as I play this next piece."
McGuire is one of the most famous living composers in Scotland today.
Quiñones' performance, while delivering on traditional and eighteenth century compositions, also included whimsical and jazz-influenced compositions.
"She made me want to go home and dust my flute off," said one audience member.
Quiñones currently resides and plays in York, England where she is the
flute instructor for York College, Ampleforth College, the Mount School, and the Bootham Junior School.
