I am writing in support of Ballot Issues 3A & 3B for the Aurora Public Schools bond election and mill levy override. These questions are at the bottom of the four foot long ballot but it is important for Aurora citizens to find 3A & 3B and vote "yes" to support the Aurora Public Schools.
Through the dedicated work of APS teachers, support staff and administrators, the Aurora Public School District has implemented the Vista 2010 Strategic Plan. Over the past couple of years that work has produced student achievement results that have beat the statewide average, and more progress lies ahead. APS is on track to fully close the student achievement gap and routinely surpass statewide averages in all subjects.
The Aurora Public Schools have not asked for a tax increase for 18 years and I believe that is quite an achievement. This funding will build a new high school, a K-8 school and will bring building renovation to every older school in the district. These funds will also maintain smaller class sizes, add classroom technology, and begin to fund full day kindergarten.
As the owner of residential and commercial real estate in Aurora I am always critical when analyzing property tax increases. However, I see this request by APS as an investment because real estate values are closely linked to the quality of neighborhood public schools. I believe that this investment in the Aurora Public Schools will increase property values throughout the district.
To Aurora School District residents - please join me in supporting Ballot Issues 3A & 3B. With your vote, the Aurora Public Schools will continue great student progress and APS will be recognized as one of the best school districts in Colorado.
