Free and open to the public.

The Aurora Fox Theater, 9900 E. Colfax will pay tribute to Native American Heritage Month Nov. 7th, 12 noon until 1pm. This is the kick off event for the Colorado Folk Art Council's, Cultural Concerts on Colfax series, a free monthly showcase of cultural concerts offered Nov.-May every year since 1996.

The Nov. show features Mexica dancers from Chimaltonalli, storyteller Tonali and the Seven Falls Singers and Dancers in an hour long showcase of historic and cultural performances.

"This year we wanted to draw attention to the indigenous peoples of Mexico and the U.S. By offering a diverse range of performers" said Ron Gehauf CFAC president. "We normally kick off with a Day of the Dead show, but this year wanted partake of the national observance of Native Americans"

Ironically the call for a national day of recognition for Native American contributions to the US began at the turn of the century. It took 84 years before an "official proclamation" came into to being. In 1990 President George Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 as "National American Indian Heritage Month." Similar proclamations have been issued each year since 1994.

National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month is celebrated to recognize the intertribal cultures and to educate the public about the heritage, history, art, and traditions of the American Indian and Alaska Native people.

Carrie Howell of the Seven Falls Dancers and Singers and youth coordinator for Denver Family Resource Center said "This is a wonderful opportunity for native and non Indian youth to gather to together to experience the culture of Native Americans. We forget sometimes, by getting caught up in our everyday lives, that the Native American culture is a living and breathing culture. It is good for our youth, to experience the traditions."
