Below are exerpts from two members' essays, written in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
From
Derrek Davonte Ward's essay:
"... Dashaud Perkins has been a very big influence for me. He has impacted the way that I act, dress, talk, basically my total appearance. I want to thank him for starting this organization because if he didn't, I don't know where I would be at this point in time. I want to thank him for saving my life. He is like my best friend. When things get hard for me, I always know he is there for me. I can always talk to him about everything. He was once a teen and is still young, so he knows how I am feeling. I am happy that he started this dance group because he has se my goal of being a dancer to new heights. Being in thid dance group has gotten me seen by people that can put me in the shots. He has done so much for me and the rest of the team.
Thank you, DaShaud. I will always be grateful."
From
Savey Baucom's essay:
"... Solid Confidence has showed me that it's ok to be different, which is hard in a society where everyone wants to fit in. For example, a lot of costumes we perform in, many groups end up trying to copy. We end up being trendsetters instead of trend followers. We don't show a lot of skin because we want people to focus on our movements and not our bodies. This carries over into everyday life. I am confident in myself, whether I have fancy clothes or not.
... Solid Confidence is more than a dance group to me. It is a place where I can have love and I am constantly learning and growing to be a functional member of society, instead of a burden. Solid Confidence has helped me believe that my life counts."
