ROTC students go 'A Mile High' to present flag

Aurora Central High School students had the best seats in the house to see the Denver Broncos play the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL preseason game. Before the game, members of the APS Rolling Thunder Drill Team walked on the field to present the national colors during the National Anthem.

More than 40 members of the Rolling Thunder Drill Team competed for the honor of presenting the American flag at the football game. Four drill team cadets earned a place on the field based on their performance, attitude and grades.

"Being part of the Rolling Thunder Drill Team is amazing," said ROTC cadet Gladys Aguilar Loya. "The team is like my second family. I love spinning rifles and marching and being on the team makes me feel proud, skilled and accomplished."

The students put aside their nerves for the game at Invesco Field to show off their dedication and discipline. "It was amazing to see the poise and precision our cadets showed in front of 70,000 people. I think I was a lot more nervous than they were. It was a great evening for everyone," said Senior Aerospace Science Instructor, Scott M. Van Ness, Lt Col, USAF (retired).

"The most memorable part of performing our Color Guard for the Denver Broncos game was the thunderous applause," said ROTC cadet Will Brown. "The feeling you get when people are cheering for you is gut-wrenching."
